Synopsis
Woman of the Breakwater is a movie collage in the vein of Kurosawa's Dodes'kaden, a group portrait of the down-and-outs who make their home alongside the Manila Bay breakwater, a ramshackle community of beggars, scavengers and hookers.
The picture is animated by the arrival of two brothers from the provinces, Basilio and Buboy, on the run from gangster trouble back home. Basilio falls for the disease-ridden prostitute Paquita and magically succeeds in restoring her to mental and physical health, but thereby runs foul of her ex-boyfriend 'Bosing' Dave, the crippled former cop who considers himself top dog on the breakwater.
Visayan singer-songwriter Yoyoy Villame holds the whole thing together with a succession of Brechtian ballad-commentaries. O'Hara doesn't shrink from detailing the symptoms and effects of abject poverty, but his remarkable film is as warm and funny as it is horrifying. Humane and life-affirming, in fact.
